Straight answer

Spider control in Arizona

Spider control works best when it targets what spiders eat. Reduce the crickets, flies and other insects around a property and treat the harborage — eaves, block walls, stored items — and the spider population follows them down.

When dealing with spider infestations in Arizona, First Inspection Termite & Pest is the expert you can rely on. Our highly trained technicians specialize in identifying and eradicating a wide range of spider species commonly found in the region, including potentially dangerous ones like the Black Widow and Brown Recluse. Using advanced techniques, we work to remove spiders from your property.

Our comprehensive approach addresses the immediate infestation and targets the underlying causes to prevent future invasions. We offer thorough inspections to pinpoint spider entry points and nesting areas, followed by customized treatment plans. Proactive measures include sealing entry points, reducing outdoor attractants, and advice on maintaining a spider-free environment.

Phoenix field guide

Spiders: source to solution

A useful inspection follows the pest from the conditions that support it to the route that reaches the home.

  1. 01

    Where it starts

    Sheltered web sites

Eaves, block-wall openings, meter boxes and stored items stay protected from disturbance.

  2. 02

    How it travels

    Spiders follow insect activity

Crickets, flies and other prey make a property more attractive and sustain the population.

  3. 03

    What breaks the cycle

    Remove webs and reduce prey

Treating harborage, entry points and the food source breaks the cycle behind repeat sightings.

Prevention

Protect Against Spiders

Protecting your home against spiders is crucial for a safe and comfortable living environment. Knock down webs as they appear — it discourages rebuilding in the same spot. Keep boxes off garage floors and away from walls, seal gaps around doors and windows, and switch exterior lighting to warmer bulbs that attract fewer of the insects spiders feed on. Pay particular attention to block walls, meter boxes and the underside of patio furniture, where Black Widows prefer to sit.

Black widows in Arizona: identification and where they sit

Most spiders in an Arizona yard are harmless and worth leaving alone. The western black widow is the one worth identifying correctly.

What the adult female looks like
The western black widow, Latrodectus hesperus, is recognizable as a glossy black spider with a red hourglass on the UNDERSIDE of the abdomen. Because the marking is underneath, it is usually only visible when the spider is hanging upside down in its web, which is how they normally sit.
Males and juveniles look different
They tend to show more color, with orange, red and white markings on the back and sides. They are routinely mistaken for a different species entirely.
Where they sit
University of Arizona Cooperative Extension describes them as shy and secretive, found in seldom-disturbed areas. On a Phoenix property that means block-wall voids, under patio furniture that has not moved in months, inside valve boxes, and in the corners of a garage.
If someone is bitten
Extension notes that severe pain, respiratory distress and cramping can follow a black widow bite, and that a very effective antivenin is available. Seek medical advice rather than waiting to see how it develops.
